Frequently Asked Questions
Real questions from parents, answered clearly and honestly.
- 01Most younger beginners do best with 30-minute weekly lessons. 45-minute lessons are a great fit for older students, multi-instrument learners, or students working on more advanced repertoire who can sustain attention and practice independently between lessons.
- 02Most students attend lessons once per week, which provides the consistency needed for steady progress and skill development.Bi-weekly lessons are available for motivated students with established practice habits. Lesson frequency can be discussed in advance to ensure it aligns with the student’s goals and learning needs.
- 03Virtual lessons are conducted using Google Meet.Things you will need for virtual lessons:Reliable internet connectionDevice with a camera and microphone (such as a laptop or tablet)A standard web-browser compatible with Google MeetAn instrumentA quiet, well-lit space where the instrument and hands are clearly visible works best
- 04Lessons are offered in your home or online. In-home instruction is available in West Bakersfield and West Visalia.
- 05I teach piano, and bass guitar. And yes, there’s a secret menu of instruments that I teach, which may be available by request depending on the student’s age, goals, and setup.
- 06Lessons are not built around a single method book. I use established, age-appropriate materials to provide structure and sequence, then adjust the pacing, emphasis, and supporting materials to fit each student. Core resources may include:Music Practice WorkbookPiano Method Book (ages 4-7)Piano Method Book (ages 7+) The method books provide a clear progression, but they do not dictate the lesson. Instruction is shaped by the student’s development, needs, and musical goals.
- 07Student progress is tracked through the Music Practice Workbook. Each week, I set the student’s Focus, Practice Tasks, and Practice Target. The workbook tracks what happens between lessons, and we use that information to guide the direction of the next lesson.
- 08Because my roster is currently full, rescheduling is limited and cannot always be accommodated. A minimum of 48 hours’ notice is required to avoid a late cancellation charge. When sufficient notice is given, I’ll do my best to reschedule when possible. Lessons canceled with less than 48 hours’ notice, or missed without notice, are subject to a late cancellation charge.
- 09Lesson times are reserved specifically for each student. Because my roster is full, rescheduling is limited and cannot always be accommodated. A minimum of 48 hours’ notice is required to cancel or reschedule a lesson without charge. Lessons canceled with less than 48 hours’ notice, or missed without notice, are subject to a late cancellation charge, as the time cannot be rebooked easily.
- 10Because lesson time is reserved and preparation is completed in advance, payments are non-refundable.This includes missed lessons and late cancellations.
- 11All lessons are billed on a monthly-recurring basis. Payments can be made manually each month through Payments on the website or set up through autopay for ongoing billing.
- 12In-person lessons are canceled if a student is sick, in order to prevent the spread of germs. However, the lesson is still charged, as the time was reserved for your family and cannot be rebooked on short notice. As a small, single-instructor studio, reserved lesson times are how I make a living. If your child feels well enough, the lesson can be held virtually instead.
