Knowing What to Practice
Isn’t the Same as Knowing How

A student can leave a lesson knowing exactly what to practice and still struggle to get started, stay focused, work through problems, or recognize progress.

The Music Practice Workbook was created for that gap between lessons.

How the Workbook Works

At each music lesson, the student's instructor sets the Focus, Practice Tasks, and Practice Target.

At home, the student uses a Practice Anchor to get started, follows the plan, tracks reps, and records one Small Win from each practice session.

At the next lesson, the student and instructor look back at the week's Practice Health and use what happened to help decide what comes next.

The CALM Learning Loop

Behind the CALM Practice System is a simple model of the learning process:

The CALM Learning Loop is the learning logic that runs through the system. The Music Practice Workbook is where that logic becomes a practical weekly process.

The 20-Week Journey Toward Independence

The workbook moves through four phases, gradually shifting more responsibility to the student.

Weeks 1–5 — Building the Routine
Make practice easier to start and repeat.

Weeks 6–10 — Learning How to Learn
Listen closely and use what you hear to guide the next attempt.

Weeks 11–15 — Taking Ownership
Make more choices and take more responsibility for practice.

Weeks 16–20 — Building Independence
Use the process more independently to work through challenges and keep moving forward.

Checkpoint reflections help students notice how their practice is changing along the way.

How Students, Parents, and Instructors Work Together

The workbook gives each person a clear role in helping the student become more independent.

Parents

Help create the conditions for practice, make it easier to get started, and step back as the student becomes more independent.

Students

Follow the practice plan, do the work, and gradually take more responsibility for what happens between lessons.

Instructors

Set the musical direction, define what the student should work on, and use what happened during the week to guide the next lesson.

Created by Teacher Rob

The Music Practice Workbook was developed by Robert Melendez, “Teacher Rob,” after more than 15 years of teaching private music lessons.

It grew from a challenge he saw again and again: students could leave a lesson with clear direction, yet still struggle to turn that direction into productive practice during the week.

That experience led to a deeper question: how can students be taught not only what to practice, but how to practice?
