Meet your Instructor
Robert Melendez’s journey through music began in fifth grade with a tuba and a sheet of music. By seventh grade, he was teaching himself guitar by ear. In high school, he performed in the marching band and jazz band; in college, he played in both the symphony and jazz ensembles—blending reading, improvisation, and ensemble discipline. That balance between structure and creativity still defines how he teaches today.
As a private music instructor serving students ages 6 to 17, he helps kids grow not only as musicians, but as confident, emotionally aware individuals. His teaching blends performance prep with mindfulness and emotional development, using a personalized approach rooted in the Mother Tongue Method—an ear-first, language-like way of learning music through listening, repetition, and joyful immersion. Parents are often surprised to see their kids practicing without being asked—and genuinely excited to learn.
Shy students often open up in his lessons. Perfectionists learn to embrace mistakes as part of growth. One student described lessons as the first place they felt free to make mistakes and still feel encouraged. Whether teaching piano, guitar, or bass, his goal is to help every student find their musical voice and grow with confidence.
As a performer and recording artist, he brings real-world insight to his teaching. He has toured nationally with a finalist from NBC’s The Voice, recorded in professional studio sessions, played with symphonies, and performed at hundreds of weddings, fundraisers, and private events. These experiences shape his practical, grounded approach to helping students connect with music on a deeper level.
In addition to weekly lessons, he will soon offer structured video courses with a mindfulness component to help families begin their musical journey from home. He also hosts spring recitals and summer recording projects, giving students the chance to shine and celebrate their progress.
From stage to studio to home, Robert helps each child grow into their full creative potential—with confidence, curiosity, and joy.
