Frequently Asked Questions
Real questions from parents, answered clearly and honestly.
- 01Most younger beginners do best with 30-minute weekly lessons. This length supports focus, retention, and consistent progress without overload. 45-minute lessons are a great fit for older students, multi-instrument learners, or students working on more advanced repertoire who can sustain attention and practice independently between lessons. Bi-weekly lessons work best for motivated students who practice independently or are already comfortable managing their progress between lessons. Weekly lessons are recommended for beginners.
- 02Lessons are offered in your home or online. In-home instruction is available in West Bakersfield and West Visalia, with online lessons available beyond these areas.
- 03I teach piano, guitar, bass, and ukulele. I also play several additional instruments, which may be available by request depending on the student’s age, goals, and setup. These options are discussed in advance to ensure a good fit.
- 04Lessons are guided by a clear instructional approach rather than a single method book. Curriculum materials are used as structured resources to support skill development, sequencing, and reinforcement—but instruction is led by the instructor, not the book. I use established, age-appropriate materials to provide familiarity and structure for families. Parents are welcome to review the core method resources used in lessons, including: • Piano Method Book (ages 4-7)(https://amzn.to/3YsNlJH) • Piano Method Book (ages 7+) (https://amzn.to/49ohizI) • Guitar Method Book (https://amzn.to/4ssR1ZE) • Ukulele Method Book(https://amzn.to/4ppvcre) While these resources offer trusted progression and clarity, lessons are personalized. Pacing, emphasis, and reinforcement are adjusted to match each student’s development, attention span, and goals—ensuring progress is intentional, not mechanical.
- 05Most students attend lessons once per week, which provides the consistency needed for steady progress and skill development. Bi-weekly lessons are available for motivated students with established practice habits. Lesson frequency can be discussed in advance to ensure it aligns with the student’s goals and learning needs.
- 06Virtual lessons are conducted using Google Meet. A reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone (such as a laptop or tablet), and the student’s instrument are required. A quiet, well-lit space where the instrument and hands are clearly visible works best. Before the first lesson, I’ll help ensure the setup is working smoothly so students can focus on learning rather than technology.
- 07After each lesson, I send a lesson journal by email. This journal serves three purposes: it confirms attendance for billing, outlines the specific goal to reach by the next lesson, and provides a clear, minimum practice plan designed to support that goal. This approach gives parents visibility into what was covered, what progress looks like, and how practice connects directly to results—without requiring guesswork between lessons.
- 08Because lesson spots are limited, new students begin by joining the waitlist (https://www.robsmusiclessons.com/register)through the website.
- 09Because my roster is currently full, rescheduling is limited and cannot always be accommodated. A minimum of 48 hours’ notice is required to avoid a late cancellation charge. When sufficient notice is given, I’ll do my best to reschedule when possible. Lessons canceled with less than 48 hours’ notice, or missed without notice, are subject to a late cancellation charge.
- 10Lesson times are reserved specifically for each student. Because my roster is full, rescheduling is limited and cannot always be accommodated. A minimum of 48 hours’ notice is required to cancel or reschedule a lesson without charge. Lessons canceled with less than 48 hours’ notice, or missed without notice, are subject to a late cancellation charge, as the time cannot be rebooked easily.
- 11Because lesson time is reserved and preparation is completed in advance, payments are non-refundable. This includes missed lessons and late cancellations.
- 12All lessons are booked on a recurring basis. Payments can be made manually each month through QuickPay on the website or set up through autopay for ongoing billing.
- 13In-person lessons are canceled if a student is sick, in order to prevent the spread of germs. However, the lesson is still charged, as the time was reserved for your family and cannot be rebooked on short notice. As a small, single-instructor studio, reserved lesson times are how I make a living. If your child feels well enough, the lesson can be held virtually instead.
